چکیده

We introduce photometric stereo reconstruction for surface analysis of mucosal tissue. Photometric stereo captures images of a surface from a single camera, but illuminated from different light sources. From the set of images, a detailed surface reconstruction is estimated. We apply photometric stereo principles to mucosal tissue, which raises technical challenges due to its specular appearance. Following reconstruction of the surface, we apply surface analysis techniques based on differential geometry to detect regions that are locally spherical, suggestive of polyps. The research described in this paper is a first step towards a real-time clinical support system based on 3D reconstruction of human tissue for gastereoentrologic applications such as colonoscopy.

Tissue Shape Acquisition with a Hybrid Structured Light and Photometric Stereo Endoscopic System

In situ 3D reconstruction from endoscopic images is important to determine the correct course of action for, e.g., treatment of abnormal growths. Currently, the endoscopist has to rely solely on visual cues in order to infer the growth’s shape and size and determine an appropriate treatment. However, tissue uniformity and scale ambiguity from traditional monocular endoscopes make this visual as...

Paper Surface Topography Using Three-light Photometric Stereo

In paper industry, the measurement of paper surface topography is important for paper quality control. Noncontact and fast photometric stereo overcomes the disadvantages of the traditional surface topography measurement by the profilometer. In this paper, we present an improvement to three-light photometric stereo for paper surface topography reconstruction. Experiments comparing reconstructed ...

Enhanced Photometric Stereo with Multispectral Images

We introduce a technique based on multispectral images aimed at improving Lambertian photometric stereo. Many photometric stereo algorithms assume Lambertian reflectance, but deviations from this ideal produce errors in shape reconstruction. To alleviate this problem, we exploit the wavelength-dependence of material reflectance. Based on the observation that reflectance at certain wavelengths f...

An Introduction to Image-based 3D Surface Reconstruction and a Survey of Photometric Stereo Methods

1 This paper provides an introduction to photometric methods for image-based 3D shape reconstruction and a survey of photometric stereo techniques. We begin with taxonomy of active and passive shape acquisition techniques. Then we describe the methodical background of photometric 3D reconstruction, define the canonical setting of photometric stereo (Lambertian surface reflectance, parallel inci...

3D Reconstruction of Interreflection-affected Surface Concavities using Photometric Stereo

Image-based reconstruction of 3D shapes is inherently biased under the occurrence of interreflections, since the observed intensity at surface concavities consists of direct and global illumination components. This issue is commonly not considered in a Photometric Stereo (PS) framework. Under the usual assumption of only direct reflections, this corrupts the normal estimation process in concave...
